ASPENS are a tribe of trees. Some are tall and flambouant, others are closer to the ground, thick and protective. They are a stage for spring green in the summer whispering in the wind and a grand finally of yellow and orange in the fall. Then suddenly they are stripped naked for the winter. The tribe is not a traveler, they stay with their group and slowly spread out as needed. They are indigenous plants in my area of Western Wyoming. The tribe is about attitude, interaction, and relationships. Long-term relationship with buffalo berries, twin berries, snow shoe rabbits, little brown birds and a hiding place for deer and moose. They live in their own special place where they find peace and just the right light and space. Every year when I look at their rejuvinating show of colors as a celebration. There they are again, resilient and standing tall.
Aspens are fire resistent.
I did this series at the edge of the forest. They are a "plein air creations", the sun, rain and wind offered input, as well as a curious but cautious Steller Jay. Sometimes things get a bit wild when a gust of wind picks up an art piece and takes it through the sagebrush. The pieces are finished in my studio.
